Abstract
Measurements of total heat flux and heat flux distribution at the image in a double parabolic carbon are image furnace with inputs from 10 to 20 kw are described. It is shown that for an are input of 17 kw the maximum heat flux is about 300 cal cm-2 sec-1, and that almost all of the radiation passing through the image focal plane is enclosed by an area of 2 cm diameter. The distribution of energy is seen to be Gaussian.
An overall furnace factor, defined as the ratio of radiation through the image focal plane to the energy input, of 0.14 is evaluated. The optical factor, defined as the ratio of the radiation through the image focal plane to the radiation from the anode crater. of 0.46 falls in the range predicted by Bliss.
