Abstract

A geometrical description of mechanical systems subjected to impulsive non-holonomic constraints is given. Their motions are determined by means of suitable projection operators which allow us to evaluate the instantaneous jumps of momenta due to the action of impulsive reaction forces. Several paradigmatic examples are investigated from this viewpoint: a disk falling into a plane, a rolling ball hitting a wall and the collision of two balls.
