Abstract

Necessary and sufficient conditions for the separation of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the geodesics in an n-dimensional Riemannian or pseudo-Riemannian manifold are obtained. The integrability of these conditions is investigated and several results are found which are of particular interest in the four-dimensional space-times of general relativity.
