Could one invent the N string?

The author points out that the recently proposed gauge invariant field theories for free strings can be generalised to include an arbitrary number, N, or Virasoro gauge algebras. The corresponding light front gauge expressions are also given. The resulting models have intercept N and critical dimension 26. Scattering amplitudes and interaction terms are briefly discussed and a possibly fatal problem is noted, but no definite conclusions are drawn.
