Abstract

Natural radiative lifetimes of some excited levels belonging to the 5p6s and 5p5d configurations have been measured by the Hanle method. Some of the levels could be optically excited only from the metastable 3P1 and 3P2 levels of the 5p2 ground configuration. These comparatively low-lying levels were sufficiently populated at the temperature necessary to produce a Sn atomic beam. The following results were obtained:

τ(5p(3/2)6s1P1) = 4.11 (22) ns τ(5p(1/2)5d3D1) = 3.9 (5) ns

τ(5p(1/2)6s3P1) = 4.75 (18) ns τ(5p(1/2)5d3D2) = 5.5 (4) ns

τ(5p(3/2)6s3P2) = 4.25 (23) ns τ(5p(1/2)5d3D3) = 5.8 (6) ns

These values are compared with the results from other types of investigations.
