Abstract

Stricto sensu, there is no physical upper limit for a magnetic field. However, magnet design may encounter some physical limitations related to the physical properties of materials. This is particularly clear for superconducting magnets, but it is shown that such limitations do not exist for magnets made of normal conductors. It is also demonstrated that economics will definitely set an upper bound to the highest magnetic field one can dream of.
