Abstract
Certain statistical factors which govern the probability that an electron or vacancy is initially in one of the molecular states used in the Fano-Lichten model of heavy ion collisions are calculated. Expressions for the probabilities pi that a molecular orbital contains i vacancies are given in terms of overlap integrals involving the asymptotic wavefunctions of the collision partners. The basis for the calculation and the relationship of these factors to measurable quantities is discussed.
