Abstract
Foil excitation of fast ion beams has been used to produce few-electron ions of magnesium and aluminium. The emission spectra have been analysed with a 10 cm curved crystal X-ray spectrometer. The spectra show series of transitions in H- and He-like ions and numerous satellite lines. By comparison with Hartree-XR calculations, these lines are seen to arise from core-excited two- to five-electron ions.
