Investigation of Resonance Integrals Occurring in Cosmic-Ray Diffusion Theory
Abstract
Using an analytic expression for the power spectrum, P(k), we have performed, by contour integration, certain integrals that arise in the theory of cosmic rays propagating in a static, random magnetic field. We find that as t oc these integrals relax to a resonance' form employed by previous authors. We also find, however, that the time scale over which this relaxation occurs can depend critically on the correlation length of the random field and on , the cosine of the particle's pitch angle with respect to the background field, and in particular for = 0 this relaxation does not occur. This is in contradiction to statements made by some previous authors.
