Evidence for low dust content of Virgo cluster spirals.
Abstract
It is shown, at the 98 percent confidence level, that deviations of individual galaxies from the mean blue-light Tully-Fisher relation in the Virgo cluster depend on galaxy inclination. The deviations are in the sense that would be expected if Virgo spirals are dust poor compared to field galaxies. If the mean internal absorption in Virgo spirals is half that observed in average galaxies of similar types, then the Virgo distance modulus derived from the Tully-Fisher relation in blue light has to be increased by 0.27 mag. This would result in a 12 percent decrease in the Hubble parameter.
