A study of absorption and reddening using absolute magnitudes and colors of galaxies
Abstract
Redshifts, V magnitudes, and V-r colors are given for the brightest galaxy in each of 48 clusters and seven groups of galaxies. Absolute magnitudes and colors are calculated for each cluster, and the latitude dependence of the absolute magnitudes and colors is attributed to Galactic absorption. The values found for the color excess and absorption at the Galactic pole are Ev =0.017+0.005 and Av=0.045+0.049. Consideration of possible selection effects indicates that these values are 0.75 of the true values; the resulting corrected values are Ev =0.023+0.007 and A v =0.06+0.07. if the Whitford absorption curve is valid, this reddening corresponds to = 0.027+0.008.
