Data were abstracted from the National Hospital Discharge Survey, a computerized database maintained by the federal government that gathers samples of hospital inpatient discharge data from across the country. Medical records from 466 nonfederal short-stay hospitals (8% of all hospitals) are selected by systematic random sample, and approximately 270,000 discharges are collected per year. The database includes information from January 1979 to December 1997.

Results
The National Hospital Discharge Survey database included approximately 3,734,000 procedures performed for prolapse between 1979 and 1997. The number of women undergoing prolapse procedures decreased from 1979 to 1997 (P = .01, Fig 1).The number of cases was highest in 1979 at approximately 226,000, decreased to a low of 165,000 in 1988, and then gradually increased to 205,000 in 1997. Comment
After decreasing for several years, prolapse surgery rates have been stable for the last decade. Although prolapse surgeries commonly occur in women with other health problems, they represent relatively safe procedures with low morbidity and mortality. These numbers are comparable with those found by the Oxford Family Planning Association study.11 Vital Health and Statistics reported the rate of cholecystectomy to be 1.61 per 1000 population in 1998, less common than prolapse surgery.12
