Abstract

Even more so than WW I, there is a tendency to consider the experience of WW II as conducive to peace and harmony.2 The world conflict appears somehow to have increased the appeal of an integrated Europe and stimulated both new initiatives and the formulation of more radical concepts of renunciation of sovereignty in return for stability, economic growth and peace.

For all these things have been done by Europeans to other Europeans in Europe. That in itself should be enough to remind us that the story of recent European history that we have been telling ourselves and our children is little better than a fairy tale. And yet our politicians go on telling it.

Timothy Garton Ash, 19991
