Abstract

“The Indians are too spiritual.” This was the astonishing comment one senior minister from an OECD country made to me in 1991 when I asked him whether he thought India could emulate China’s economic rise. Fast forwarding to the present day, he has to go knocking on Indian government ministers’ and business leaders’ doors seeking new market opportunities as Chinese growth cools. Not exactly instant karma, but quite close.
