Cross Border Migrant Organizations in Comparative Perspective

Abstract

When comparing the array of studies on MOs in Germany, Spain, the UK and Poland, one sees that there are far fewer studies in Poland (Fijałkowska and Bąbiak, 2010; Iglicka, 2005; Zioła, 2010). This research gap posed a challenge for the study of the Ukrainian and Vietnamese MOs in Poland and for embedding them in the framework of contextual factors that influence their development and performance. One of the main reasons for this research gap seems to be that during the communist era, Poland did not experience significant immigration inflows. In the period 1949–1990 an annual average of only 2,000–3,000 immigrants to Poland were recorded (Kępińska, 2007).1 Low immigration rates as well as the implementation of the assimilation measures2 favoured the creation of an ethnically homogeneous society in Poland. In consequence, the state authorities gained only very limited expertise in how to manage immigration and integration.
