Abstract
Paulo Freire stressed in his writings that education is a political phenomenon that is not neutral. It is obvious that the educational process is frequently used by those who hold social and political power in order to maintain their position. However, it is also a truism that learning pays. Ball (1992, cited in Longworth & Davies, 1996) states that “training (at its best) will make nations and their citizens wealthier, societies more effective and content, individuals freer and more able to determine their lives in the way they choose” (p. 9).
