Abstract
Throughout the 1990s, multibillion-dollar oil and gas deals and pipeline contracts completed in Central Asia made headlines in major newspapers. Some commentators hastened to compare the Central Asian energy reserves favorably with those in the Middle East. Yet other experts claim that the region’s oil reserves are in fact modest and no match for those in the Middle East. Whoever is right, the region’s estimated potential, ranging from a conservative 80 billion barrels of oil to an optimistic 200 billion barrels, is valued at 5 to 7 trillion U.S. dollars at 2003 prices.
