Abstract
The intellectual traditions of Feminism and Marxism have, for some time, faced the challenges posed by post-structuralism. This chapter explores the ways in which proponents of each have mirrored the other in the nature of their responses, reflecting what has been for each an immense challenge to the ways in which the intellectual is conceptualised, yielding several timely and pertinent questions: How, do Feminist debates around the role of the intellectual echo those within Marxist theory about the status, role and function of ‘intellectuals’? To what extent can debates within feminist theory address ongoing tensions and contradictions of classical, contemporary and post-Marxist theorising about the function and place of the intellectual in social and political struggle?
