Abstract
This chapter will first present the main findings of the case study in the areas of social and economic settlement. The findings demonstrate the experiences of refugees living in Britain and in many key areas reflect the theoretical paradigms of migration and settlement presented in Chapter 5. The data also provides new insight into the factors that affect social and economic settlement in the UK. Second, this chapter will present the views of refugees themselves about the factors that affect the settlement of members of their own community and the things that could be done to improve life for refugees in the country of asylum. Drawing on the research findings and the expressed concerns of refugee people, strategies that could be implemented in order to improve the situation of refugees in the UK will be suggested. These strategies will be related to the current situation of forced migrants under the 1999 Act and under the temporary protection schemes that have been utilized in Europe since the 1990s. Finally, the likely direction of policy in light of the European harmonization project and the implications of current developments in the UK case will be explored.
