Abstract
The introduction of the single currency into eleven Member States of the European Union marks a major turning point in the development of the European Community. The euro will impact on work, employment and business, both in the ‘euro zone’ and elsewhere in Europe. It is arguably the most important means of consolidating and increasing the efficiency of the Single Market, which was established at the end of the successful UK British Presidency of 1992 and from which the UK has derived considerable benefit. For that reason alone, UK businesses in particular should be watching events, as well as fully prepared to exploit all the new opportunities which arise.
