Gender, Realism and International Relations

  • Chapter
Gender and Sovereignty

Abstract

Realism remains the most influential current within international relations (IR) as an academic discipline. Realism claims that sovereignty is not only a statist property, but it is one which is not necessarily contentious if defined in an empirically rigorous, non-normative manner. Since sovereignty is seen as not necessarily contestable, it is, realists argue, also gender-free.
