Abstract
Excavations at Isernia uncovered remains of Palaeolithic Neanderthal man that date back 70,000 years. Stone Age and Bronze Age settlements have been found across the Italian peninsula. The Etruscans, established in Italy by around 1200 BC, were navigators competing for valuable trade routes with the Phoenicians and Greeks. During the 8th century BC Greek cities established colonies along the southern coast and in Sicily. Magna Graecia flourished for about six centuries before succumbing to Rome.
