The Far Right in France and Italy

Nativist Politics and Anti-Fascism

  • Chapter
Shadows over Europe

Abstract

Theorists disagree over the extent to which support for the contemporary far right stems from a fundamental change in party systems and voter alignments in Western Europe. One point is beyond debate, however: Far-right parties of Western Europe stand out in terms of their preoccupation with immigration and their marked intolerance toward racial and ethnic minorities (Betz 1994, Ignazi 1992, 1997, Inglehart and Rabier 1986, Kitschelt 1995).
