Structure of Higher Education System

Description

Post secondary education consists of tertiary education and vocational education offered by various institutions.

Stages of studies

University level first stage

Bachelor’s degree

Courses leading to the Bachelor of Arts (BA), the Bachelor of Science (BSc) and other Bachelor’ s degrees (Education, Commerce, Nursing, Agriculture etc) and last four years. In Law, the LLB lasts five years.

University level second stage

Master’s degree

Courses lead to the award of a Master of Arts (MA), a Master of Science (MSc), or a Master of Education (MEd) after a minimum of two years’ study beyond the Bachelor’s degree. A thesis is usually required.

University level third stage

PhD

A PhD is obtained in at least 4 years’ study and research following the Master’s degree
