Abstract

American demographer and historian of economic thought. Born in Ohio and educated at Ohio State University, he taught at Duke University from 1932 until his retirement. Under his influence Duke became a centre for studies devoted to the history of economics, a development that culminated in the publication (begun 1969 and at Duke) of the specialized journal, History of Political Economy.
