Environmental fitness has been used to denote how well the strategy of an organization, its capabilities, its structure or its activities match the environment external to the organization. The external environment includes all factors beyond the boundaries of a firm that have the potential to affect the viability and performance of the firm, its constituent parts and its strategy.

Environmental fitness has been used to denote how well the strategy of an organization, its capabilities, its structure or its activities match the environment external to the organization. Alternate terms include external fit, ecological fitness (Winter 2005) and evolutionary fitness (Helfat et al. 2007).
