Abstract

The popular meaning of remittances has changed from “sending money home” to the more contemporary one of money transfers within households. Money has begun to flow two ways between the source and destination countries, particularly for migrants from middle-income countries such as India and China. This is redefining the traditional concept of remittances. It is an important development for Australia, as Asian migrants comprised one third (33 percent) of the overseas-born population in 2011.

Parts of this chapter draw on Supriya Singh & Liliya Gatina (2015) Money flows two ways between transnational families in Australia and India, South Asian Diaspora, 7:1, 33–47 http://www.tandfonline.com. With permission.
