Abstract
Chapter 3 looks at ways that culturally responsive and socially just leadership can advance student engagement. An attempt is made to reconceptualize student engagement drawing on the findings of the research. A brief overview of the literature on student engagement is included that highlights the definitional conundrum that still exists in the field. A model of student engagement that is grounded on the principles of equity and diversity and culturally responsive leadership is discussed. It moves the discourse on student engagement away from fixing the student to focusing on fixing the system.
