Abstract

This chapter explores Kim Novak’s films from 1954 to 1964. The detailed discussions of ten films are divided into three groups. The first is the early films that launched Novak’s career and made her a major star: Pushover, Picnic, The Man with the Golden Arm, The Eddy Duchin Story and Jeanne Eagels. After a brief discussion of Pal Joey the second group is comprised of the two films with James Stewart: Vertigo and Bell, Book and Candle. The final group is Middle of the Night, Strangers When We Meet, and Kiss Me, Stupid. The chapter explores the Novak figure’s feelings of estrangement from the world and how these are posed against male feelings of obsession, and the recurrent presentation of marriage as mischance or calamity.
