Abstract
Heie Treier (2001: 216), an Estonian art critic, reported that multiculturalism and the relation to the Other were widely discussed throughout the 1990s in Estonia, but that
in the Estonian context this does not relate to communities of other races, but to coping with ourselves as a small nation, in whose collective psyche there is an ingrained fear of being assimilated, of losing our identity.
