Weltweit leiden über 500 Mio Menschen an einer chronischen Virushepatitis, besonders Infektionen mit dem Hepatitis-B- (HBV) und/oder -C-Virus (HCV) sind von Bedeutung. Derzeit können 5 Hepatitisviren (A-E) differenziert werden. Alle können eine akute, B-, C- und D-Virus auch eine chronische Virushepatitis verursachen. Chronische Verläufe können zur Leberzirrhose sowie zum hepatozellulären Karzinom (HCC) führen [17]. Die chronische Hepatitis ist definiert durch Nekrose und Entzündung mit oder ohne Zeichen von Fibrose in der Leber über mindestens 6 Monate. Nach Hepatitis-B-Infektion im Erwachsenenalter ist der Verlauf in etwa 5 % chronisch, für die Hepatitis C schwanken die Angaben zwischen 50 und 80 %. Nicht alle Patienten mit einer chronischen Hepatitis-C-Infektion erleiden Komplikationen [18]. Die Indikation zur Therapie muss daher individuell gestellt werden [13].
