Summary

Cichorium intybus L., common chicory
Cichorium intybus L., common (wild) chicory is used as herbal remedy since ancient times. The remedy, used as a stomachic agent among others, is also utilized as a vegetable in its cultivated forms such as chicory and radicchio. The roasted root was well known as chicory coffee until the middle of the 20th century. According to new experimental results, the plant’s phytochemical composition with a broad spectrum of different substances (e.g. sesquiterpene lactones, phenolic acids, tannins, coumarins, inulin) causes a variety of beneficial effects for the treatment of metabolic diseases or bacterial infections. The article provides information about the properties and use of this old medicinal plant.
