Summary

The methods used thusfar by the authors for detecting phloroglucinol derivatives in Dryopteris species have been extended. New compounds, made available kindly by Miss Penttilä were chromatographed with the methods used formerly; RF–values are given in table 1.

All compounds available were tested with thin–layer Chromatographie methods, the RF–values found are given in table 2.

By combining paperchromatographic and thin–layer Chromatographie methods 7 samples of Dryopteris crislata (L.) A. Gray and 3 samples, supposed on morphological grounds to be hybrides, were investigated carefully for the phloroglucinol derivatives present in the rhizomes. The results are presented in table 3; they demonstrate a reasonable constancy of phloroglucinol derivatives in Dryopteris cristata; aspidinol, desaspidin and flavaspidic acid are the main constituents of this species and albaspidin, para–aspidin and an unknown substance Z occur as minor compounds. The putative hybrides contain the same substances and in addition aspidin and an unknown substance X; this confirms their supposed origin.

The results of preliminary examinations of rhizomes of Dryopteris villarii (Bell.) Woynar are reported in table 4. This morphologically and cytologically heterogenom species seems to be characterised by very large amounts of aspidinol; Flavaspidic acid, desaspidin, para–aspidin (not found in one sample), albaspidin and a substance perhaps identical with filixic acid are present too. The two samples representing the ssp. pallida contained furthermore variable amounts of aspidin and one of them also the unknown substance X.
