Discussion
This is an example of a rare condition of the knee presenting with relatively common mechanical symptoms. Approximately 75% of all cases of PVNS occur within the knee.1 The etiology of the condition is unknown but suggestions have included a primary neoplastic process or an abnormal response to inflammation caused by repeated trauma or hemarthroses.2, 3 There are 2 described types of PVNS, a diffuse and a localized form. Our findings in this case are consistent with the localized form of the
Conclusion
Although this condition is a rare cause of mechanical symptoms in the knee, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of such symptoms because it is easily treated. Magnetic resonance imaging in this case showed the lesion well (Fig 1), and it is a useful first line of investigation in such cases.
