Induction motors have been around for more than 100 years, and as a consequence are regarded by many to be a converged technology. Nothing could be further from the truth! The last 30 years have seen considerable developments in design, and significant effort is still being expended on improving and extending this important industrial technology. This paper reviews the most important advances and shows how the use of modern modelling techniques is helping to accelerate the rate of change. It concludes with a little crystal-ball gazing, trying to identify the developments of the next few years.
