A new type of optical fibre amplifier, a ‘hybrid amplifier’, especially developed for multiwavelength long distance transmission systems in the 1.55 µm window is presented. A 38 dB small signal gain, an +18 dBm saturation output power, a very flat gain spectrum and a very high signal-to-noise-ratio are obtained.
