New modal representation of electromagnetic waves supported by horizontal wire above dissipative earth
A new discrete mode that satisfies the radiation condition is found for the problem of a horizontal wire above an air-earth interface. It can be shown to be an important part of the total current distribution on the wire. It exhibits the nature of a fast wave and has a much smaller attenuation constant than the quasi-TEM mode.
