Hydrolysis of scandium(III): ultracentrifugation and acidity measurements

Abstract

Equilibrium ultracentrifugation and acidity measurements of hydrolysed scandium perchlorate solutions in 1M-sodium perchlorate at 25° have been interpreted by assuming the species ScOH2+, Sc2(OH)24+, Sc3(OH)45+, and Sc3(OH)54+. The least-squares refined formation constants are Sc3++ H2O = ScOH2++ H+ log β1.1=–5·11 ±·09, 2Sc3++ 2H2O = Sc2(OH)24++ 2H+ log β2,2=–6·14 ±·02, 3Sc3++ 4H2O = Sc3(OH)45++ 4H+ log β4,3=–13·00 ±·06, 3Sc3++ 5H2O = Sc3(OH)54++ 5H+log β5,3=–17·47 ±·03 No evidence has been found for the existence of species containing more than three scandium atoms.
