Effect of solvents on adsorption of acetic acid dimer onto activated charcoal

Abstract

Composite adsorption of acetic acid in benzene, toluene and xylene organic solvents has been studied on activated charcoal at various temperatures. Both solvent and solute exhibit separate Langmuir isotherm fits concomitantly. TGA results confirm that the same corrections for solvent adsorptions and surface excesses have been carried out. Gibbs energy and enthalpy changes for the solvent, solute and the overall adsorption equilibria processes have been determined and low values were found, indicating physisorption. The effective number of nearest adsorbed solvent molecules (n) solvating a molecule of the adsorbate, has been evaluated and has been found to decrease with increasing temperature.
