An overview of the current status and prospects of cathode materials based on transition metal sulfides for magnesium-ion batteries

Abstract

Magnesium-ion batteries (MIBs) are one of the alternatives to the current Li-ion batteries (LIBs) as a power source for future electronic equipment with high security, low expense, and long service life. Accordingly, the development of active cathode materials with prominent reversible cycle and excellent compatibility with electrolytes is the key to improving the comprehensive performance of MIBs. Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) are favorable to insert/extract Mg2+ between molecular layers and display good Mg storage capacity. With the increasing application of TMSs as active cathode materials for MIBs, recent research should be evaluated to provide inspiration for future studies. In this work, the application of several typical TMSs as active cathode materials for MIBs in recent years is reviewed and summarized. Existing issues, future challenges, and development trends are illuminated to provide some references for future works on enhancing the comprehensive performance of MIBs.
