A novel access to ionic superoxides and the first accurate determination of the bond distance in O2

Abstract

The compound [C6H4(NMe3)2-1,3][O2]2·3NH3 was prepared from [NMe4][O2] via cation-exchange in liquid ammonia; the bond length of the superoxide anion was determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis to be 134(3) pm.
