Free jet investigation of the rotational spectrum of glycerol

Abstract

The microwave spectra (60–78 GHz) of two conformers of jet cooled glycerol have been assigned. They are characterized by three and two intramolecolar hydrogen bonds, (labelled as G′Gg′gg′ and GGtg′g′, respectively). Assuming that no conformational relaxation takes place in the adiabatic expansion, and a Boltzmann distribution of the rotational levels in the jet, the G′Gg′gg′ conformer has been calculated to be the more stable by 2.6(6) kJ mol-1.
