Investigation of temperature dependence of the interaction second virial coefficient using gas–liquid chromatography

Abstract

A high-pressure gas–liquid chromatograph (g.l.c.) has been produced to measure the interaction second virial coefficient (B12) of nitrogen with benzene, cyclohexane and n-hexane on di-isodecyl phthalate stationary phase. The unit was used up to 6 atm pressure and from 30 to 70°C. The present investigation was carried out to study the temperature dependence of B12 values for the above systems and to examine the dependence of B12 on structural changes of the C6 hydrocarbons.

The agreement between our B12 values for the nitrogen + benzene system and those previously reported is within the quoted uncertainties, while published values at 35°C for nitrogen + cyclohexane and for nitrogen + n-hexane agree well with our values at 30°C and 40°C. The experimental B12 values have experimental uncertainties of ± 12 cm3 mol–1.
