Worldwide Unconformities in Marine Sediments related to Eustatic Changes of Sea Level

Abstract

THE Deep Sea Drilling Project has discovered hiatuses of up to tens of millions of years in the stratigraphic record of every principal ocean basin. A hiatus is recognized by a discontinuity in palaeontologic ages and/or by an abrupt decrease in average sediment accumulation rates below that typical for the sediment type present within a cored interval. The physical expression of a hiatus may be a surface(s) of unconformity within the stratigraphic column resulting from an interval(s) of non-deposition and/or erosion.
