Movement of myosin heads during a heart beat

Abstract

X-RAY diffraction studies of heart muscle undergoing cyclic contractions have shown that the myosin heads are transferred from the vicinity of the thick filaments to that of the thin filaments as the muscle passes from the diastolic (relaxed) to the systolic (contracted) state1,2. We have now followed the time course of this transfer using a fast X-ray diffraction technique and found that the transfer occurs almost in parallel with tension development.
