An antiviral substance extracted from Streptococcus faecalis

Abstract

ALTHOUGH there are a number of reports on virus-inhibiting substances, knowledge of those of bacterial origin is rather limited1–6. Horsfall and co-workers7,8 reported that polysaccharides of Klebsiella pneumoniae suppressed multiplication of pneumonia virus of mouse in vivo and of mumps in ovo. Carver et al.9–11 described virus-inhibiting factor(s) which they isolated from different species of bacteria belonging to both Gram-positive and Gram-negative groups. We report here that a substance or substances extracted from Streptococcus faecalis inhibited proliferation of certain human pathogenic viruses in vitro and in vivo.
