Further observations on the structure of the lipid-containing bacteriophage PM2

Abstract

RECENT work on the proteins of bacteriophage PM2 have led us to a model for the structure of this virus, proposed in this communication. Experimental results have enabled us to assign each of the four proteins1 to morphological structures of the virus revealed by electron microscopic and structural studies. Packing considerations indicate that protein II must form the outer protein shell2. Both proteins I and II are on the outside of the phage particle as demonstrated by labelling with radioactive iodine after lactoperoxidase treatment3 by the method of Phillips and Morrison4,5.
