Recording System for Monitoring Automaticity of Heart Cells in Culture

Abstract

IN recent studies with cultured beating heart cells1–5 data have usually been acquired by intermittent microscopic observations of the contractions of the cells. The more laborious method involving measurement of intracellular electrical depolarization is too expensive for routine use6. We therefore set out to develop simplified culture techniques and an automated system for monitoring both the chronotropic and inotropic effects of chemical and physical agents.
