Abstract
IN 1949 I published a hypothesis suggesting that the cyto- and syncytio-trophoblast were derived from the granulosa cells that surround the egg when it leaves the ovary; the argument, however, depended on indirect evidence, and although this indirect evidence has further accumulated it is not proposed to discuss it here1.
