Abstract
IT has been recently reported from this laboratory that Liesegang-like rings of growth and inhibition of growth of bacteria were produced around filter paper disks in inoculated agar media when a chelating agent was dissolved in the agar and a metal ion was applied on the disk1. The formation of as many as six concentric and alternate rings of growth and absence of growth was ascribed to the presence or absence of toxic mixtures of chelating agents, metal chelates and free metal ions in the areas of the rings. These areas of interaction were invisible and apparent only through the biological response of the micro-organisms.
